Jean-Baptiste Arban (1825-1889) was born in Lyon, France and is principally remembered as one of the finest cornet players of all time as well as being a successful composer and conductor.  His virtuosity was astonishing and he made acclaimed tours all over Europe; as a conductor, his career included performances at the Paris Opera.

In 1857 he became professor of saxhorn at the E´cole Militaire, and in 1869 became professor of cornet at the Paris Conservatoire.  In 1864 he published his Grande méthode complète pour cornet à pistons et de saxhorn which became the definitive instructional method on cornet playing of the nineteenth century and is still consulted today.
