Mozart Apollo and Hyacinth (K.38) (Full Score, hardback)
A latin Intermedium of the School drama "Clementia Croesi"

Mozart’s first work for the stage, Apollo und Hyacinth, was premièred in the Great Auditorium of Salzburg University on 13 May 1767.  As befitted its original purpose, it was not a self-contained work but a so-called “intermedium”, which in this case meant a multi-sectional vocal piece whose sections were performed in alternation with the acts of a spoken play.  Though somewhat puzzling today, this mode of performance nonetheless rests on an age-old tradition that originated in Italy during the fifteenth century, when the acts of comedies – and later, albeit more rarely, tragedies – were separated by dances, masquerades, or other pieces of music known as intermedia.  Over the years the genre evolved into a form in its own right and came to include short operas staged and interpolated in spoken plays.
