Who does not know the story of Theseus?  His fight against the Minotaur is legendary.  Plutarch wrote down the story that served as the basis for the opera.  “Arianna in Creta” is still one of the more seldom-performed works.  It takes us into a world of cruelty, yearning and hope, love and devotion, pain and wounding, lies and despair.  Here, Handel’s masterly feeling for drama, characterisation and his efficient use of musical forms and structures are used to best effect.
