Jan Dismas Zelenka (1679-1745) was a composer who, not only in Czech music, but in world music occupies a position equal to that of all the great composers of the musical baroque.  Zelenka was a personality whose compositions form one of the foundations stones for the development of European and baroque culture and art.

He wrote music for all genres – instrumental including orchestral suites and chamber sonatas, much church music - masses and cantatas, and also sacred music for the stage.  Towards the end of his life, when he was living and working in Dresden, his compositions were influenced by Italian opera which had become popular in Dresden by that time.
