A symphonie concertante – or simply “Concertante,” as Haydn titled his work – sometimes more closely resembles a concerto in its formal design and its handling of the solo instruments (e.g. a double or quadruple concerto) and at other times a three-movement symphony (minus the minuet).  It may also reflect influences from such earlier forms as the divertimento or the concerto grosso.

It was premièred  in March 1792 during Haydn's first stay in London whilst he was under contract to the London concert impresario and violinist Johann Peter Salomon.  Its success was such that the performance was repeated a week later “by popular demand”.  The critics praised Haydn’s originality and variety of expression, even mentioning the unexpected silences, and specially singled out the solo passages in the finale, which Haydn had recognizably adapted to suit Salomon’s warm tone and brilliant technique.
