Mozart Concerto for Horn No.1 in D major (K.412 + K.514) (Horn & Piano)

All four Mozart horn concertos are closely associated with the horn player Joseph Leutgeb, for whom they were written during the composer’s period in Vienna (between 1783 and 1791).  They display his compositional approach to the possibilities and limitations of the instrument at that time and were also influenced by Leutgeb’s skills as a performer; he was evidently a virtuoso of the hand-stopping technique on the horn.

Of the Concerto in D major K.412 only the first movement and a draft of a Rondo as third movement exist in Mozart’s handwriting.  A middle movement is missing completely.

The Rondo has survived in two different forms: an incomplete orchestrated score by Mozart (K.412) and, as has recently been discovered, a new composition (K.514) by Franz Xaver Süssmayr (1766–1803).  Mozart’s sketch for the Rondo is complete in the solo part, but the string accompaniment is written out only to bar 40 after which it is merely hinted at here and there.

Our edition contains the traditional version of the concerto.  The completed version of the Rondo by Süssmayr, which for a long time was considered an autograph by Mozart, was added to the first movement.
