Berwald Concerto for Piano and Orchestra in D major (Full Score, hardback)

Franz Berwald stemmed from a rather multibranched family of musicians who partially lived in Sweden and partially in an area which today belongs to Poland. He was born and died in Stockholm.

Berwald spent many years in Germany and Austria, and even though he lived in the Romantic era, he considered his compositional style in the tradition of the Vienna Classic.  He is one of the most remarkable Swedish composers of the 19th century, but just as he did not pursue Romanticism, he did not much integrate Nordic folkloristic elements into his music.  During his lifetime he was much respected for his technical compositional skill, in particular with regard to counterpoint; the originality of his music, however, was at times perceived as bizarre.

Forced to adjust by financial pressure, Berwald did not only work as a violinist, violist, composer, piano, voice and composition teacher, and publisher of a music journal but also founded an orthopaedic institute in Berlin where he applied treatments he had invented himself using mechanical devices which he had designed.  Years later and back in Sweden he made a living as the director of a glass factory and after that by establishing a brick factory.

Complete Works
This first edition of the complete works of the composer offers a musical text which satisfies the needs of scholars and performers alike.  Almost 50 years of editorial history lie between the publication of the first volume, String Quartets (1966), and the last volume, „Modehandlerskan“ (2013), a venture which provides a worthy tribute to the most important Swedish composer of the 19th century.
