Haydn Concerto for Trumpet in E-flat (Hob.VIIe:1) (Study Score)

On the evidence of the signed autograph score Haydn wrote his Trumpet Concerto in 1796, shortly after returning to Vienna from his second trip to England.  The work was intended for the Viennese court trumpeter Anton Weidinger (1767-1852), who had built a keyed trumpet in order to be able to play chromatic notes in the middle octave of his instrument.  Weidinger played second trumpet, which explains his preference for the instrument's low register.  Around 1800, moreover, interest in the art of clarino playing had decreased rapidly due to the change in ideal sonorities between the baroque and romantic periods as well as the invention of the clarinet.
