Eine kleine Nachtmusik – “a little nocturne, consisting of an allegro, minuet and trio, romance, minuet and trio, and finale, for two violins, viola and basses”.  Thus, writing in the autograph catalogue of works he had been maintaining since the beginning of 1784, Mozart described in a few words what is probably his most popular piece of instrumental music.  The date was 10 August 1787; the place, Vienna.
