Gounod Faust - Dialogue versions (Full Score, hardback)
Opera with a Prologue and four Acts (First version) / Opera in five Acts (Second version).

Charles Gounod's "Faust" achieved international recognition in its version as a fully sung opera.  It was largely forgotten that the work was originally composed with spoken dialogues.  The early versions with dialogues and melodramas before the 1869 performance at the Paris Opéra are the subject of this new edition and contain extensive unknown material.  (The third version, "version opéra", was published in 2016 in a separate edition, BA 8713).

Already during the rehearsals in 1858 at the Théâtre-Lyrique, during the first series of performances there in 1859, then in the run-up to the resumption in 1862, and during the performances on the smaller stage at the Place du Châtelet, changes and transformations took place continuously.  Clearly defined versions are thus impossible to establish.  However, by drawing on the complete accessible source material (including recently discovered exciting material) as well as the most diverse aspects of reception, Paul Prévost systematically presents a score in two main versions, in whose chronology continuity and change become comprehensible.  Thus, documenting all the musical changes, a score has been created that is practical for performances and shows a "Faust" that is still far too unknown - a "Faust" rooted in the tradition of the comique.

Several musical numbers are published here for the first time as scores: the trio Faust Wagner-Siebel "À l'étude ô mon maître", the duet of Valentin and Marguerite "Adieu, mon bon frère!", Méphistophélès' aria "Maître Scarabée", Siebel's romance "Versez vos chagrins dans mon âme! ", Valentin's aria with choir "Chaque jour, nouvelle affaire", the witch's choir "Un deux et trois", as well as seven "Mélodrames", whose missing or incomplete orchestration has been completed for the present edition.  Only recently the long lost second part of Faust's original cavatina "Salut! demeure chaste et pure" was found.  Other numbers differ from the well-known pieces only in details of the orchestration.

The first recording of Gounod's "Faust" in the original version of 1859 was awarded the "Opus Klassik" 2020.
