Foerster For Prague (Three songs for high voice and piano)
Josef Bohuslav Foerster (1859 - 1951) was a Bohemian composer and musicologist. Born in Prague, his Father taught organ at the Prague Conservatory and Josef studied composition there himself. He became a critic, later moving to Hamburg where he taught at the Hamburg Conservatory. Returning to Prague in 1918 he taught at the Conservatory and University.
He wrote numerous composition the most important of which are his operas, instrumental works and choral pieces which appeared before the first World War. Initially influenced by Dvorak and Smetana his later works display none of the traits of Czech folk music as he developed a more personal and mystical style.
