Il re pastore (K.208) (Vocal Score)
Mozart, Wolfgang Amadeus
Mozart Il re pastore (K.208) (Vocal Score)
On 13 January 1775, in Munich, La finta giardiniera (K.196) went on the boards for the first time. On his return to Salzburg Mozart immediately embarked on a new vocal composition, Il re pastore (K.208).
Mozart’s serenata comes at the end of his large body of juvenile stage works, being followed by the fragmentary Zaide and then, after a period without an opera commission, by his stroke of genius, Idomeneo (1780–81). Today we tend to view its wealth of formal and musical invention in a completely different light: namely, from the perspective of a semi-staged concert piece. Mozart himself seems to have held Il re pastore in high regard.
