Martinu Incantation. Concerto for Piano No.4 (Piano Reduction)

The Incantation for Piano and Orchestra (1955/6) is Martinu’s most idiosyncratic creation amongst his piano concertos by some degree.  The work belongs to the group of orchestral and concertante scores to which Martinu gave the common designation of "fantasias".

In the Incantation, Martinu works with the classical orchestra, notably supplemented by the harp and a wide range of percussion instruments, with strong stress on tone-colouring achieved by sensitively precise chiselling and opalescent instrumentation; an effective contribution to the sonorities is made by the piano, whose function exceeds that of a concertante solo instrument.
