Mozart La finta giardiniera (K.196) (Vocal Score)

Mozart’s “dramma giocoso” La finta giardiniera (K.196) occupies a special place in his output for the stage, being his only opera to have come down to us with two authentic versions of the text.  The first version, in Italian, was premièred in Munich on 13 January 1775; the second, a German singspiel, was probably heard for the first time in Augsburg on 1 May 1780.

We do not know for certain who arranged to have the young Salzburg composer, then not yet nineteen years of age, commissioned to write an opera buffa for the Munich court and its renowned ensemble for performance during the 1774–5 carnival season.  Perhaps it was the Bishop of Chiemsee, Ferdinand Christoph Count Waldburg-Zeil (1719–1786), who had long managed the affairs of the Salzburg archbishopric at the Munich court and was also Mozart’s lifelong benefactor.
