Handel Der Messias (Messiah) (K.572) in the arrangement of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (Vocal Score)

Mozart’s arrangements of works by Handel put special claims on our attention, especially considering the works are among the most mature in Handel’s output and the arrangements fall in the final period of Mozart’s career.

These arrangements were all produced at the request of Baron Gottfried van Swieten whom Mozart had met in Vienna during his childhood, and after moving to Vienna he frequently took part in the Baron’s musical events.

As in other arrangements of Handelian works, Mozart’s re-instrumentation leads to a change in the sound character of the work, placing the composition in the tradition of the Viennese Classic.
