Although Johann Sebastian Bach’s vocal music fell largely into oblivion after his death, his keyboard music continued to be played.  In addition to his large-scale collections, a number of works that survived in isolation were already highly popular during the eighteenth century.  Foremost among these was the Chromatic Fantasy and Fugue, BWV 903, followed by the C-minor Fantasy, BWV 906 (see volume 2, BA 5233).

Many of these isolated pieces were early works that were unable to take firm hold in the repertoire.  Nonetheless, these often impetuous compositions have a special attraction all their own to compensate for the occasional shortcomings in their formal design or compositional workmanship.

This volume unites the Six Little Preludes for Beginners on the Clavier (BWV 933–938) and those fantasies, preludes, and fugues that have come down to us either separately or as ordered pairs.
