Schütz-Jahrbuch 2024, 46. Jahrgang (Hardback)

The Schütz Yearbook 2024 brings together the contributions to the symposium, which took place as part of the 53rd International Heinrich Schütz Festival in Lemgo and was dedicated to the topic of ‘Music and cultural transfer in the 17th century’.

The volume opens with a study by Detlef Haberland on the Lemgo world traveller and polymath Engelbert Kaempfer and his relationship to music.  Michael Bischoff and Vera Lüpkes deal with the significance of cultural transfer for the small county of Lemgo, both from a general and a music-related perspective.  Esma Cerkovnik looks at the Lemgo composer Johann Grabbe's stay in Italy and locates his madrigal book in the Venetian context.  Bettina Varwig deals with Heinrich Schütz by analysing his role as an agent of cultural transfer in the context of table music culture.  Kai Marius Schabram offers a focus on the history of knowledge with his study on the transfer of Italian music historiography to the German-speaking world.  Beate Agnes Schmidt examines Schütz's commitment to young musicians at the Dresden court.

The volume is rounded off with a geographically broader perspective: Scott Edwards undertakes a reassessment of the presence of Turkish music in 17th century Vienna in his contribution.
