Martinu Sonata da camera for Violoncello and Chamber Orchestra H 283 (Cello & Piano)

Bohuslav Martinu (1880 - 1959) was a Czech violinist and prolific composer.  He left his home town of Policka in 1906 for Prague and later studied formal composition under Josef Suk.  In 1923 he left for Paris where he stayed until 1940 only to spend the next few months wandering before departing for America in 1941.

The Sonata da Camera commissioned by the cellist G. Honegger was written in 1940 during a brief stay in Lisbon where Martinu had found refuge.  It is in the form of a Concerto grosso (which dominated much of Martinu's work) and similar to the Concerto da Camera for violin and string orchestra which was written in America later in 1941.
