Sonata for three Flutes (Oboes, Violins) and Basso continuo in G minor Op/34/1 (Score & Parts)

Joseph Bodin de Boismortier was born at Perpignan in 1685. No knowledge has been handed down to us regarding his early years and his musical education.  Apparently he left his native province at an early age in order to settle down in Paris, where, from 1724 onwards, he published most of his exceedingly numerous vocal and instrumental works.   Boismortier is regarded as the most prolific composer of instrumental music of his time.  He died in Paris in 1755.

Due to the large number of compositions it is not to be wondered at that here and there in his Sonates, Concerts, Gentillesses, Serenades, Divertissements, Ballets etc., there are traces of superficiality in their invention as well as in their construction.  It would, however, be wrong to reject Boismortier as a scribbler not worthy of consideration and the present sonata may prove this to be the case.

This sonata is a piece expressly written for the flute which can equally well be performed by violins or other instruments, also mentioned in the title.  The range of the first part is arranged by Boismortier in such a way that it can be played by treble recorder if need be.  It should be especially pointed out that the sonata may be played by the following particularly pleasing combination: flute, oboe, violin, basso continuo.
