Joseph Bodin de Boismortier, who was also called the French Telemann, was born in Thionville on 23 December 1689 and died in Roissy-en-Brie on 28 October 1755. After living in Metz, Nancy, Lunéville and Perpignan, he settled in Paris in 1722. There he composed operas-ballets, vocal music and secular cantatas, but obtained his most lasting success with his instrumental compositions including numerous works for flute. Boismortier is regarded as the most prolific composer of instrumental music of his time.
