Matys String Quartet No.6 (Parts)

Jiří Matys' Sixth String Quartet is a concise musical landscape of interweaving sections and moods with their mutual internal variation - not the traditional variations on the theme.  This results in a single-line compositional form, more akin to articulation than a smooth development.  But the whole is still subject to the unifying, poetically tuned goal of the composition.

The Czech composer and teacher Jiri Matys (1927 - 2016) gained his first musical training with his father, an organist and private music teacher.

Matys graduated from the Conservatory in Brno in 1947 where he had studied organ and then composition at the Janáček Academy of Music, graduating in 1951.  He began teaching in the department of composition at the Janacek Academy and was also professor at Brno Conservatory between 1969-1977.  Following his early retirement due to illness in 1977, he devoted himself to composition in many genres with large numbers of pieces for solo instruments, chamber music for traditional instrumental combinations (e.g. six string quartets, brass quintets), to the instrumental works for various combinations as well as vocal and orchestral works.
