Schubert String Quartets III (Parts)

The present volume collects those of Schubert’s string quartets which date from the late summer of 1813 to the year 1816.  It opens with the works of a sixteen-year-old boy about to leave the Stadtkonvikt or Imperial College and to re-establish closer contacts with the home of his father by learning and exercising the teaching profession, and ends with the work of a young man of nineteen years who is about to launch into his first year of independence (leave of absence from school service and residence with his friend Schober) and to submit his first serious application for a post outside Vienna.

Thus, the quartets are notable on the one hand for having been written for ‘domestic use’ in the Schubert household and on the other hand they also show Schubert’s increasing concern to develop his own style of obligato part-writing and a richer and more inventive accompaniment texture, and to free himself from discursive unison passages.
