Hotteterre Suite in E minor for Treble Recorder or Flute (Oboe, Violin) and Basso continuo (Score & Parts)

Jacques Hotteterre le Romain (c. 1680–1761) published two volumes during his lifetime containing nine suites for one solo instrument and continuo.  The present suite is the second from volume two. The basis for this edition is a copy of the Paris edition of 1715.

In the Avertissement to the first volume of his suites Hotteterre points out that though his pieces are written for the transverse flute, they can also be performed on other instruments such as the recorder, oboe, violin, treble viol etc.  “Some of them can even be performed as harpsichord pieces” he writes, “the upper part with one hand, the bass part with the other.  As some of the pieces are too low for the recorder, they have to be transposed if it is desired to play them on this instrument.  For example, D major should be transposed to F major, G major to B-flat major and E minor to G minor.”  Hotteterre’s instructions for transposition have been followed with the present suite, which was originally in C minor.
