Mozart Symphony in D major based on the Serenade K.250 (248b) (Full Score)
The Serenade in D major, K.250 (248b), the so-called “Haffner” Serenade, was composed as a wedding present for Maria Elisabeth Haffner, a friend of the Mozart family, and performed on 21 July 1776 (the autograph score is preserved in a Swiss private collection). A set of handwritten parts from the same year, surely prepared at the Mozarts’ behest, gathers together the suitable numbers of the nine-movement serenade into a symphony.
As with K.204, the opening march and three middle movements with the character of a violin concerto (in G major) were discarded. The sequence of movements in the resultant Symphony in D still bears the earmarks of the serenade: Allegro maestoso–Allegro molto, Menuetto galante/Trio, Andante, Menuetto with two trios, and Adagio–Allegro assai. Furthermore, a timpani part not found in the serenade has survived in Leopold’s hand along with Wolfgang’s autograph corrections in the parts (Staatsbibliothek Preußischer Kulturbesitz, Berlin).
