Mozart Symphony No.19 in E-flat major (K.132) (Full Score)

The Symphony in E-flat major, K.132 calls for four horns.  In addition to Mozart’s autograph title, Sinfonia, there is also a continuation written, as so often, in the hand of his father: “del Sigr: Cavaliere Amadeo Wolfgango Mozart nel Luglio 1772 à Salisburgo”.  The tempo marks in the first, second, and final movements are likewise in Leopold’s hand.  Mozart’s parts for two high and two low horns, all in E-flat, have puzzled scholars because the tunings of the contemporary Inventionshorn ranged from B-flat basso to B-flat alto or, at most, C alto.  Neal Zaslaw, in Mozart’s Symphonies, addresses the question of what instruments may have been intended in the original scoring.  Besides the present Andante, the symphony has also come down to us with an alternative slow movement appended to the finale in the autograph score.  The present edition reproduces this Andantino grazioso in its location in the autograph, namely, as an appendix following the symphony’s final movement.  The order in which these movements were composed has never been established, but the placement of the Andante in the autograph – namely in the “correct” position between the opening movement and the Minuet – seemingly gives it precedence over the Andantino grazioso.  Moreover, the Andante is conspicuously longer and interspersed with melodic quotations thereby attaining a uniqueness lacking in the far less striking alternative movement.
