Symphony No.38 in D major (K.504) (Prague) (Study Score)
Mozart, Wolfgang Amadeus
Mozart Symphony No.38 in D major (K.504) (Prague) (Study Score).
The autograph score of the Symphony in D major K.504 - from the holdings of the former Prussian State Library in Berlin – vanished. Like so many Mozart manuscripts removed from Berlin for safekeeping during the war, it resurfaced in the Biblioteka Jagiellonska in Kraków.
The date of composition, taken from Mozart’s autograph thematic catalogue, reads Vienna, 6 December 1786. The symphony was surely intended not only for Mozart’s impending journey to Prague for the local production of Le nozze di Figaro K.492 – an occasion accompanied by concerts and a new symphony – but also for the Viennese concerts during the 1786 Advent season. The first performance of K.504 took place in Prague under Mozart’s direction on 19 January 1787.
