Mozart Symphony No.39 in E-flat major (K.543) (Study Score)

Much ink has been spilt about Mozart’s final three symphonies K.543, K.550 and K.551.  These three works are the best-known, most frequently heard, and greatest symphonies in the Mozart canon.  As famous as they are today, the contemporary sources tell us little about these three pieces composed in a few weeks of the summer of 1788.  For a long time it was even assumed that they were never heard during Mozart’s lifetime.  The “Great” E-flat major Symphony, as we learn from Mozart’s autograph thematic catalogue, was completed on 26 June 1788.

This work stands out in particular for its scoring, being the only Mozart symphony of its period to dispense with oboes.  The resultant distinctive timbre further intensifies the subdued radiance of the tonic E-flat major.
