Mozart Symphony No.40 in G minor (K.550) (Study Score)

2nd version with clarinets

Much ink has been spilt about Mozart’s final three symphonies K.543, K.550 and K.551.  These three works are the best-known, most frequently heard, and greatest symphonies in the Mozart canon.  As famous as they are today, the contemporary sources tell us little about these three pieces composed in a few weeks of the summer of 1788.

Mozart's famous Symphony in G minor K.550 has come down to us in two versions. The first calls for one flute, two oboes, two bassoons and two horns, as well as strings.  Later, Mozart expanded the wind section by adding two clarinets, and at the same time he revised the oboe parts.  Even though the version with clarinets is the later one, both versions must be considered as equally authentic.
