Haydn Symphony No.83 in G minor (La Poule) (Hob.I:83) (Full Score)
Joseph Haydn’s Symphony No.83 in G minor, is the only one of the six “Paris Symphonies” to be written in the minor mode. Haydn composed these symphonies in 1785-6 to fulfill a commission from the Parisian concert society, Concert de la Loge Olympique.
Perhaps to offset the minor key, the second thematic group of the opening movement contains a witty and highly unusual theme, and it is generally assumed that the work’s nickname, “La Poule” (“The Hen”), owes its origins to the “cackling” interpolation from the oboe. It is uncertain when this nickname originated; whatever the case, it does not stem from Haydn, nor it is to be found in any eighteenth-century prints or manuscripts.
