Mozart Zaide (Das Serail) (K.344) (Vocal Score)
German Singspiel in two acts

Very little first-hand information has survived about Mozart’s first “Turkish opera”, a fragmentary German singspiel known today by the name of Zaïde or Das Serail.  Even Mozart’s widow, Constanze, became quite understandably excited when she discovered among her husband’s posthumous papers, without title, date or composer’s name, the obviously incomplete score of a work whose existence was until then entirely unknown to her.

Mozart’s autograph, as mentioned above, is incomplete: it lacks not only an overture but also a conclusion, for the final number in the autograph, the quartet “Freundin, stille deine Tränen” (No. 15), cannot possibly serve as the work’s dénouement, if only for internal reasons.  As for the spoken dialogue, the manuscript only contains cues to the musical numbers rather than complete texts (this was, of course, anything but unusual: the autograph scores of Abduction and Magic Flute likewise omit the spoken dialogues).  Since no separate libretto is known to exist, we find ourselves constantly groping in the dark for the plot, and especially so for the ending.
