J S Bach Art of Fugue (BWV 1080) (Study Score)

Appendix: Chorale "Vor deinen Thron tret ich hiermit"

The Art of Fugue is traditionally considered to be Bach’s swan song, and indeed it is more closely bound up with the fate of Bach’s old age than any other of his works.  Today, however, we know that its origins date back well before the year 1750.  Bach wrote his "Art of Fugue" in score and probably regarded it as an art book in contrapuntal guise.

The present study score of Johann Sebastian Bach’s “Art of Fugue” is published in conjunction with the performing edition in parts edited by Hermann Diener (BA 2600).  This edition, based on the first edition (original edition) and Bach’s manuscript (Berlin autograph), reproduces the text of the first edition.

Detailed information on notation, instrumentation, order of performance etc., is contained in the Preface to the performing edition in parts, which also features a table listing the previously suggegted sequences in which the pieces can be played.
