Haydn, Michael
M Haydn Nunc dimittis (Full Score)
Among the works of Johann Michael Haydn (1737 – 1806) the graduals are particularly important, by reason both of their number and of their historical significance. He was Mozart’s successor at court and cathedral organist in the service of the Prince-Archbishop of Salzburg, and between 1781 and his death he wrote more than 90 graduals.
The “Nunc dimittis”, a setting of the familiar words on the Song of Simeon, was composed in January 1784, and is scored for very small forces: four voices, two violins, two horns and basso continuo. The voice parts may be supported by trombones.
The new edition is based on the autograph in the Bavarian State Library in Munich and also on a printed edition published in around 1835.
